SLOG Week 6

Lectures:

Like last week, we spent a lot of class time doing proof examples this week. At least we did on Monday. I was away on Wednesday because I was busy cramming for 2 midterm tests that I had that day. I should probably go back and look at what I missed. On Friday, we did problem solving practice, which was a problem about re-arranging pennies in two drawers. Doing problems like these are fun, even though I usually can't solve them.

Tutorials:
The tutorial this week was for practice writing proofs and proper proof structures. This was pretty similar to the previous tutorial so there weren’t any real problems. It was really boring though, since we did nothing for almost the whole tutorial session.

SLOG WEEK 5

Lectures:

This week was a very short week since there were no lectures on Monday due to thanksgiving and no tutorials on Tuesday. Most of what was done in lectures were more sample proofs. We were taught new ways of proving stuff such as using proof by contradiction, proving the contrapositive, proof by cases, or proof by existence, which is a lot shorter and easier. Proofs seem like the hardest part of the course so far.

Going through all the proof examples in class was pretty helpful in hammering proper proof structure into my memory. Although writing all of the structure gets a bit tedious at times.

SLOG WEEK 4

Lectures:

There was not as much content covered this week since most of the lecture time was spent doing example proofs. They were helpful in helping me understand how to write proofs though. The tutorial this week also covered how we should be structuring proofs which were also helpful practice. I just need a bit more practice on knowing what comments I’m supposed to write for proofs.

Midterm:
This week was also the week of the midterm. Overall, the midterm was not too difficult mostly because we had a sample test with solutions and the midterm test was very similar to that sample test.

Tutorial:
The tutorial this week was very helpful since I was having trouble remembering how to structure proofs. Going through some examples and writing a quiz made it easier to remember.

SLOG WEEK 3

Lectures:

This week, we learned a lot about mixed quantifiers and how the order of the quantifiers matters. This is something that I already learned in MAT137 so it was not really anything new. We were also taught transitivity, where if P implies Q, and Q implies R, then P implies R. The last lecture we had talked about proofs and proof structure, which seems pretty confusing at the moment. I should probably go back and look through the notes again.

Assignments:
Our first assignment was due this week. Overall, the assignment had some really challenging questions and it took a lot of time to finish. I had the most problems with the venn diagram question because I was not really sure what I was supposed to show with the venn diagrams.

Tutorials:
The tutorial this week was pretty simple, except for guarantees since we never covered that in lectures.

SLOG Week 2

This week’s lectures:
This week, we learned how to use the many different logical symbols that we know to create logical statements. We also learned a few new symbols for conjunction, dysjunction and negation. We also learned how to negate logical statements with the negation symbol. There were also slides which talked about the many different laws such as De Morgan’s law, the associative law, commutative law, and distributive law. Aside from this, the lectures this week felt a bit slow since a lot of time was taken to show things with truth tables or venn diagrams. On the Friday lecture, we spent the class solving a problem. This was a nice change of pace and it was pretty interesting

Difficulties:
I ran into a few difficulties this week when trying to translate sentences into logical statements. I got wrong answers at times and at other times, I wasn’t really sure what to do. I should probably read over the course notes and look for some practice problems to fix this.

SLOG Week 1

What New Things Were Learned?
As with many other courses, the first week and a half has been a bit slow. We were taught topics such as how to problem solve, set theory, and logic. Logic was not too hard for me to understand since I have taken a computer science course before in high school and this topic was also being covered in another course I was taking, MAT137. Set theory was also simple to grasp since it was another topic that MAT137 covers. Some of the things we learned with logic included if-then, vacuous truth, and the two quantifiers (existential and universal).

How Did Tutorials Go?
Tutorials this week went well. The TA took up questions from the exercise sheet and answered questions that people had. We then wrote a very brief quiz. Overall, there were no problems with the tutorial.

How Do I Feel About This Course?
I find this course to be interesting since it is supposed to help people learn how to solve word problems. I look forward to seeing what I can learn from this course to improve my problem solving. The professor also seems nice and he is not boring to listen to.

Achievements?
Since this is only the second week, there were not many or any achievements at all other than being able to understand the concepts being taught.
